Frank Farris

I teach in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, at Santa Clara University. From 2001--2005 and again in 2009, I served as Editor of Mathematics Magazine, an official publication of the Mathematical Association of America. In early 2015, I completed service to the MAA as Chair of the Council on Publications and Communications. During fall quarter 2011, I served as Benedict Distinguished Visiting Professor at Carleton College.

My book Creating Symmetry: The Artful Mathematics of Wallpaper Patterns was published in 2015 by Princeton University Press. It received an Honorable Mention for a 2016 PROSE Award. Here is a page of errata and some reviews:

  • The most recent review in the Notes of the Canadian Mathematical Society.
  • Evelyn Lamb, at her Scientific American blog.
  • At MAA Reviews.
  • In the newsletter of the London Mathematical Society.
  • In the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
  • Delighted that people are enjoying my book. It's truly a labor of love.

As part of the SymmetryWorks! project at Bowdoin College, students Bridget Went and Son Ngo built a new open-source platform to help people experiment with wallpaper functions! You can try it by downloading from their GitHub page. (Uses QtCreator programming environment.)

I help to coordinate Bay Area Mathematical Adventures a series of talks intended for high school students interested in mathematics, sponsored jointly by SCU and San Jose State University. Please contact me if you would like to be added to our email list.

  • Here is a page with some of my (very old) favorite computed images.

Just for fun: What happens when you deform a sphere into a shape with perfect polyhedral symmetry and release it from rest? Spherical harmonics give the answer. Here's one example. "It is the beating of the Telltale Tetrahedron!"

See more animated GIFs based on mathematics at my Giphy site.

I still have a few things about wallpaper and computed images posted on an old machine: www-acc.scu.edu. Have a look.
