I indicates a course that introduces students to the indicated objective,
P indicates a course that gives students practice with the indicated objective, and
D indicates a course that allows students to demonstrate mastery with the objective.

The subject matter in certain courses is such that students are introduced to an objective (or topics related to one or more objectives), practice their grasp via numerous assignments, and by the end of the course, have demonstrated mastery of that subject matter. Thus, all three letters are used for such courses.
