Faculty Position Openings
2008-2009 Academic Year

General Information

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Santa Clara University is in the College of Arts and Sciences, an undergraduate college. The emphasis is on excellent teaching, but research is encouraged.

Santa Clara is on a quarter calendar (where each course meets 200 minutes per week for 10 weeks). Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes are 65 minutes long and Tuesday/Thursday classes are 100 minutes. The Fall Quarter begins in mid-September and continues till early December. The Winter Quarter begins right after New Year's Day and Spring Quarter ends in the second week of June.

Since the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science does not sponsor any graduate program at this time, faculty members mainly teach several sections of lower division service courses as part of the annual teaching assignment, with some specialized upper division courses.

The University's location in "Silicon Valley" offers many opportunities for contacts with high tech industry.

Open Positions

For the academic year 2008-2009, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has the following openings:

Tenure Track Positions

For the academic year 2008-2009, there will be no tenure track positions available.

Multi-year, One-year, and Part-time Positions

The needs of the Department for additional full-time or part-time instructors depend on several factors: sabbaticals of current faculty, availability of current instructors, projected enrollment of students.

As of March 2008, the Department will have need of several full-time lecturers (four multi-year [2 or 3 year] positions and two one-year positions) and several part-time lecturers for the academic year 2008-2009 and is now accepting applications.

The standard teaching load for full-time positions is seven courses per year. Persons selected for part-time positions would teach one (or two) sections per quarter (up to a maximum of four courses per year).

The official university position descriptions (which details faculty responsibilities) for the full-time positions are available from the website of the University's Human Resources Department at http://www.scu.edu/hr/careers/faculty.cfm

Santa Clara University is committed to the strategic goal of enriching the quality of our community of scholars by increasing the diversity among faculty, staff, and students. Candidates who feel they can contribute to the university's commitment to excellence through diversity are invited to detail their experience with underrepresented groups in mathematics in their letter of application or separate statement.

For the 2008-2009 academic year, classes begin on Monday, September 22, 2008. Faculty are expected to be available the week of September 15-19, 2008, for orientation programs and faculty meetings.
