For those who wish to pursue an study either in applied mathematics or in actuarial science while majoring in mathematics, the Department provides "emphases" in both of these areas with lists of recommended courses. (See the Mathematics majors and minors link.)
For those who wish to pursue an study in cryptography and security while majoring in computer science, the Department provides "emphasis" in this area with a list of recommended courses. (See the Computer Science majors and minors link.)
In addition, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science cooperates with the Department of Computer Engineering in offering the option of a five year combined B.S. and M.S. program for those majoring in computer science.
The Department also cooperates with Santa Clara University's Center for Science, Technology, and Society in the interdisciplinary Minor in Science, Technology, and Society.
Although the department does not offer independent graduate programs either in Computer Science or in Mathematics, graduate programs in related fields are sponsored by the University's School of Engineering, in the Department of Computer Engineering and in the Department of Applied Mathematics. Students interested in graduate study should contact those departments directly.
There are, in fact, three different undergraduate programs at Santa Clara University in which a student may study computing.
In the School of Business, a student can major in Operations and Management Information Systems (OMIS).Students in any of these programs study about computers and computer applications, but the curriculum is shaped by the academic unit (i.e., Business, Engineering, Arts & Sciences) in which it lies. All three programs are also influenced by national professional guidelines.
In the School of Engineering, a student can major in Computer Engineering.
In the College of Arts and Sciences, a student can major in Computer Science.
