Winter Quarter 2012
PLEASE: when using public computer labs (Learning Commons,
O'Connor, or elsewhere), remember that there are others in the room and that
the NOISE LEVEL should be kept appropriately LOW! ALSO, in O'Connor,
please remember that faculty offices are very near the computer lab
and that loud discussion can adversely affect faculty working with
students in their offices nearby.

Written Homework
NOTE that if problems seem appropriate, you are free to
code iterative methods in some computer language and
obtain the solution via computer. Also for problem pertaining
to linear algebra problems, you are free to make use of Matlab/Octave.
- Homework 0 (Matlab/Octave Introduction), Due: Fri, Jan 13, 2012
- Homework 1, Due: Wed, Jan 18, 2012.
Sec 1.2, p 28 [8th ed. p 26]: 1b, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5c, 17, 19b, 20 using
eqs in b from 19;
Sec 1.3, p 39 [8th ed. p 36]: 1a.
- Fri, Jan 20, 2010, MP 1 -- see above
- Homework 2, Due: Wed, Jan 25, 2012.
NOTE: nothing prevents you from creating a small program to
compute answers to some of the following problems.
Sec 2.1, p 54 [8th ed. p 51]: 1, 15, 16;
Sec 2.3, p 75 [8th ed. p 71]: 5a (use p0=2), 7 (for 5a), 9 (for 5a)
(for problems 7 and 9, use the endpoints of the interval as p0 and
p1), 19;
Sec 2.4, p 86 [8th ed. p 82]: 8a -- NOTE: The problem has an exponent of
2n and not 2n;
Additional Problem: Find the next three intervals, given the initial
interval of [0,2], needed to find the roots of y=x2-2
via Regula Falsi.
