Printing to the HP LaserJet Printer
in the O'Connor 30 Computer Lab
Prenote: Necessity of Individual Login
In February 1998, the O'Connor Computer Lab, O'C 30, was upgraded.
Students now have access to the laser printer,
but must first login to the
campus Novell network before attempting to print. Unlike the
Orradre and Kenna labs during 1997-98 which have default local
printer routings, the O'Connor lab requires specific login to the
network and specific redirection of the default printer to the
local printer.
NOTE: Current plans call for the Kenna and Orradre labs to
be reconfigured during the summer of 1998 to support the same
sort of an individual network login procedure to enable printing
in the lab.
Network Login
Activing the Network Login Window
To log into the network, one activates the Novell Network Login
window by either
- clicking on the shortcut icon to NetWare Login on the
desktop, or
- restarting Windows95 and explicitly requesting a login as a
different user (Start -> ShutDown -> (last option)
Close all programs and log on as a different users), or
- choosing NetWare Login as follows: Start -> Programs
-> Novell -> Netware Login
Entering Your Username
Because the network in the O'Connor Computer Room is
part of the University Enterprise Network, it may
be necessary to specify usernames and resources using their
full path (or name). (This procedure will always work whereas
the username alone may not always work.) Using the full
path for a username may also be necessary if a previous user
is still logged on.
The full path
- for Undergraduate students is:
.username.ugrad.students.scu
- for Graduate students is:
.username.grad.students.scu
- for Faculty/Staff is:
.username.users.scu
NOTE the use of periods before each segment of the full form!
You then enter your Novell Network Password. If you do not know
or remember your password, contact the help desk in Kenna 101.
If your username and password were entered successfully, you will now be
logged in to the Novell Network and have access to the
standard network resources.
The Novell Network script will open another window and process your
login. At the end, close the "Login Results" window.
Default Printers
If you have designated a default printer in your Network login script,
your PC printout will automatically be routed to that printer,
whether that
printer is in your room, in your residence hall, or in another place.
Merely because you are using a computer in O'Connor, this does not mean that
automatically printout will come to the O'Connor printer!
Lacking such a personally-defined printer, the default printer will be
the O'Connor HP LaserJet Printer.
For those who have another default printer, to
use the O'Connor printer, you must specifically change the
default for your session to O'Connor if the software you are using
requires this to be done.
Borland C++
When using Borland C++, to print a file, one chooses the Print
option after choosing File (leftmost option on the top menu
bar). Prior to printing the first file, one should choose the
Print Setup option and choose the second ("Specific
Printer") option, which
is labeled "HP LaserJest Series II on \\SCU\.MATH_LAB_LJ2...".
Other Software
Other software is configured similarly for printing to the O'Connor Printer,
or may have specific instructions for printing locally.
Questions or Problems?
For problems with getting or finding out usernames or
passwords, contact the student help desk in Kenna 101 (NOT the lab TA)
at 551-1705.
For problems with the password or username not working, call the I.T.
Service Center at 554-4082.
For questions about software in the O'Connor Computer Lab, contact
Fr. Smolarski SJ (O'C 32) or Dr. Chiappari (O'C 101).
